perspectives on THE ASIAN AMERICAN RENAISSANCE

Ryan Takemiya on the latest episode of the Atomic Zero Podcast

What is the Asian American Renaissance?

Asian American artistic expression is exploding all across the nation, whether through traditional or evolving media styles.  From YouTube stars to viral SnapChat and Tiktok videos to uploading music to streaming services, Asian Americans everywhere are  being seen and heard.  Gen Z and Millenials are demanding their time in the spotlight, and using technology to sidestep traditional routes of media distribution to get their music, films and art to the public.  We have reached a pivotal moment in Asian American history - one where Asian Americans are exerting their cultural identity on a national scale.

But the road is fraught with unknowns.  Will Asian Americans create media that gives voice to all people, or will we simply mimic the media that we've consumed, perpetuating the exclusion and oppression of previously marginalized groups?  Will we forge a unique identity for ourselves, or will we use media as a tool to further assimilate into American culture still dominated by white supremacy and other toxic modalities?  In this digital age, new content is being created every day...how can we possibly make sense of it all?
